Can I increase my level of health insurance cover after I have signed up?

Private health insurance is usually put in place by the individual in order to cover themselves for if the unforeseen should happen.  Health insurance companies put in place various levels of cover, as they understand exactly what the customers want from their health insurance, and know that it various from individual to individual.  So many companies offer you a good level of health insurance at a lower premium, but this does not mean that you cannot change the premium and select a higher premium at a later date.

Most health insurers offer a good range of benefits and most levels of insurance cover will include the following benefits:

•    Insurance cover for hospital charges.
•    Specialist and consultant fees covered by the insurance policy.
•    Diagnostic tests such as MRI scans, Ultrasounds and X-Rays
•    Insurance cover for chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The level of insurance which you are covered for will depend entirely on the type of plan which you have.  There are certain things that most private health insurers are not able to cover you for, these are.

•    Chronic and long term conditions.
•    Pre-existing medical conditions.
•    Drug, alcohol or solvent abuse
•    AIDS and HIV

Most insurance companies will allow you to add on to your existing policy and this will give you a wider range of choice meaning that you can opt for complementary treatments which include acupuncture, chiropractic treatment and physiotherapy.  You can also opt to add on to your premium to receive better dental and optical treatment.  Plus for a greater premium you usually get access to a greater range of hospitals, which offer a range which are dubbed as being exclusive.  It is also possible with many health insurers to choose the amount of excess you will pay on your policy.  The lower the excess on your policy, then the greater premium you will pay each month, the higher the excess you choose, the lower the monthly premium.
