Do I have to pay an excess on my health insurance before having treatment?

All health insurers work differently, and usually before taking out any health insurance policy, you will be told if there is an excess to pay on the account before claiming for any treatment. At this point it is well worth checking as to whether the hospital/private medical practice with whom you are having treatment is covered by your health insurance.

On calling your health insurance company, they will usually issue you with a claim number, keep hold of this number, as the private hospital or medical practitioner with whom you are having treatment will usually ask you for this number, along with your membership number prior to treatment. Many practices will not see you unless you provide them with this information up front, as without this information it can prove difficult for them to re-claim their monies.
