What is the Difference Between Contents Insurance and Buildings Insurance?

With home insurance you can opt for either buildings cover alone or buildings and contents cover.  The difference between the two is that your buildings insurance covers for the main structure of the home as well as providing insurance cover for the cost of your homes fixtures and fittings.  For example, buildings insurance will cover for the cost of the rebuilding or the repair after weather damage or fire to the home.  Your contents insurance will cover the contents within your home, for example, possessions such as television, settee, computer equipment, basically anything you would take with you, should you move home.

•    If your home was damaged by extreme whether, ie gales.

Your buildings insurance also covers for permanent fixtures within the home such as:

•    Baths, showers, basins and taps
•    Built in wardrobes.

What would be included as part of the contents insurance?

Contents insurance will usually cover for the things that are not typically covered by buildings insurance, so all of the possessions that you would take if you were to say, move home.  Most insurance companies offer good deals on contents insurance and offer benefits such as:

•    New for old on replacements (which usually excludes linen and clothing).
•    Insurance cover for contents of the home which are temporarily removed from your house.
