How Do I Make a Claim on my Insurance Policy?

Although many of us have buildings and contents insurance, not many of us have actually made a claim.  When it comes to making a claim though it is important that you have kept them all important insurance policy documents safe, as your insurance company will usually need to know your policy number when it comes to making a claim.  If for any reason you have not got your insurance documents or cannot find them, your insurance company will run through a list of personal credentials with you on the telephone in order to identify who you are.

If you have had a break in, then it is important that you have:

•    Informed the police
•    Got a crime reference number.

Your insurance company will almost certainly need to know the crime reference number if you have been broken into, before they can proceed with your claim.  If you are unsure about this, ring your insurance company and they will advise the best way forward.

If you have had a leak, then the insurance company will ask you a list of questions which are relative to your claim.  It is usually necessary for them to come out and assess the damage which has been caused.  They usually send out an independent company, who will in turn inform the insurance company of the damage and what is needed in order to rectify this.  If the home needs redecoration, then you, the home owner are usually asked by the insurance company to provide so many quotations, they will then pay you to get the work done.

All insurance companies work differently, so the above may not be the rule of thumb with all.  If you are already insured through a company, then the best way forward is to ring them for their expertise and advise.  Check out www.insurance64.co.uk for more information on home insurance and related products.
