Is ice hockey covered on my winter sports insurance policy?

After spending many hours researching various companies on the internet for ice hockey insurance, it has become evident that most of the well known travel insurance companies, who offer good deals on winter sporting activities will not cover for ice hockey, only field hockey.

Hockey itself is classed by many insurance companies as a sport which is highly aggressive.  It is recommended that if you do intend to involved yourself with ice hockey whilst out and about on your travels, that you put in place the right sort of insurance, as hockey equipment does account for a lot of injuries when taking part in the sport itself.  Hockey players can easily be hit by a hockey stick or a puck, which in turn can result in the following injuries:

•    Fractures
•    Bruises
•    Trauma
•    Concussions

So it is little wonder that many of the travel insurance companies who offer standard travel insurance, will not cover for hockey as a winter sporting activity.  Be careful too, if you think that you have found an insurance company who is willing to cover you for hockey on your insurance, check that this is for ice hockey, and not amateur field hockey.  As hockey can be played on an ice rink, field or road, it is important that you check thoroughly with your insurance company that you are covered.  If it is amateur field hockey that you do intend to play, then give your insurance company all the whys and wherefores before committing to an insurance policy, they may ask you questions about, where you intend to travel and the landscape which you intend to play hockey on.

Hockey has a lower risk of injury compared to some other sporting activities, but for insurance purposes is still considered to be a grade 1 risk sport.

Where would I find ice hockey insurance?

The internet is a fantastic place to start locking for insurance cover on ice hockey, but you may not find it with any of the usual insurance companies, you may have to go through a specialist broker.  These can be found online, but be careful, as some insurance companies do come up on the search, but may not necessarily offer the product which you are looking for.

Before committing to any travel insurance policy, it is important to remember to check through the small print and terms and conditions, which can usually be found on the company’s website.  If you are unsure as to whether to company are offering you the cover which you need after reading through the terms and conditions, then it is a good idea to give them a quick call and discuss in more detail.
